O P E R A

BARTARED BRIDE - Bedrich Smetana

Bedrich Smetana decided to compose his second opera in a lighter vein than the theme he chose for his first one "The Brandenburgers in Bohemia". One hundred and thirty years ago he composed the two-act version about the faithful love between Maoenka and Jeník, which also included spoken dialogues. In the course of another four years the Bartered Bride gained its definitive form in three acts, a work which fills opera houses again and again; it impresses, amuses, and enchants not only the justly proud Czech patrons, but has also managed to overcome language barriers and irresistibly also attracts discriminating foreign audiences.

THE DEATH OF KLINGHOFFER - John Adams

The Czech premiere of this opera by one of the most prominent contemporary American composers reflects artistically the largest problem facing society today . international terrorism. The story starts out from the factual event of the capture of the luxury Italian liner the Achille Lauro, and the killing of one of the travellers taken hostage, Klinghoffer, who is confined to a wheelchair.

LA TRAVIATA - Giuseppe Verdi

La Traviata of Giuseppe Verdi
- the most romantic of the operas composed by G. Verdi
- a famous and compelling story about Alfred and Violetta
- an excellent international cast, choir and ballet
- the most beautiful auditorium in Europe.
The novel by Alexander Dumas Jr. : "La Dame aux Camélias" inspired Guiseppe Verdi to compose an opera which today ranks among his most famous. The story of the girl from the Parisian underworld (her emotional awakening and vain desire for true love) is a story which audiences have found moving for 150 years. Verdi's music, which underlines the lyrical and profound experience rather than to theatrical effects, is equally impressive. Maybe for this very reason the melodies from Traviata have met with the genuine response of every generation.
Opera is performed in Italian original.

THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN - Leos Janacek

The production is conceived as a family performance, which one the one hand emphasises the deep philosophical dimensions of the work, but also uses the colourful comic playfulness of Janáeek. s opera allegory. The performance should become a long-term part of the National Theatre opera repertoire. This production sees the return to the National Theatre of the world-renowned Janáeek specialist Bohumil Gregor as the conductor. This title is also the first of a range of productions bearing the working title Czech opera in productions by domestic artists.

CARMEN - Georges Bizet

The story of the passionate and beautiful Carmen, the frivolous seductress, whose fickle life ands at the hands of the jilted lover, was written by Prosper Mérimée a whole thirty years before the premier of Bizet"s work. The thirty-seven-year-old composer introduced more characters into the plot. He positioned the carefree Carmen in juxtaposition to the pure and responsible Micaela, in addition to José there is his arch enemy Don Escamillo. While preserving the simple story Bizet composed an opera full of sensual and wild Spanish melodies which, however, generated enthusiasm throughout Europe only after the premier in 1875 (the audience hiss at the premier in Paris six month earlier). The composer, however, did not live to experience the success of his masterpiece. The opera will be presented in the French original.

RUSALKA - Antonin Dvorak

A lyrical fairy tale to a libretto by Jaroslav Kvapil, full of poetry and drama, narrates the story of the ill-fated water nymph, who falls in love with a prince and out of love for him longs to be a human. She suffers the pain of being a mute and the threat of damnation, and when her lover abandons her, she refuses redemption at the expense of his blood. The story tends more toward the symbolic than toward a fairy tale, but the setting in the countryside peopled with nymphs, a wafer gnome and a witch, combined with Dvorák's music, creates a magic impression.

RIGOLETTO - Giuseppe Verdi

Verdi was fascinated by the idea of presenting on stage a hunchback, a cripple clearly with a smile on his lips, tears in his eyes and anxiety in his soul. He is a person well aware of doing wrong, and therefore experiences profoundly the curse of his affliction. Rigoletto is a tragedy of social injustice and inequality, which is demonstrated both in the leading role of the ruler's jester and in the vivid depiction of the extravagant life of the ruling class. The masterful opera by Verdi, which primarily feature the dramatic and melodious, are a mainstay in the repertoire of opera stages throughout the world.

JENUFA - Leos Janacek

Jenufa represents the climax of Janáeek´s original thinking in music and music technique and is closely linked with hic character and life. It composed for the drama written by Gabriela Preissová, the essence of which is profound human understanding of the destiny of man, his conflicts and moulding by his environment and society. The deep lyrism of Jenufa contrasts with Kostelnieka´s harshness, who - afraid of scorn - commits murder. Janáeek´s score captures all moments of the drama as far as the deep emotional stresses of men who after cruel trials find a new sense of life.

LA BOHEME - Giacomo Puccini

The novel Scenes from the Life of the Boheme reminded Puccini of his own young years when he studied at the Milano conservatory. The authors of the opera's libretto created a moving story about the love of poet Rodolfo for young, gentle, poor and simple Mimi. Their idylic life together does not last too long, though. Rodolfo learns that Mimi is seriously sick and leaves her to give her a chance to find a rich boy-friend who could afford to pay for her cure. However, the sick Mimi dies in Rodolfo's arms, after all. The picture of the world of the Parisian boheme does not weaken the strength of the emotions or the opera's tragic end. The opera has been staged in the National Theatre ten times before. The opera is sung in Italian original.
