O P E R A

DON GIOVANNI - W.A.Mozart

For one decade already, the cultural life in Prague has traditionally been culminating with the stagione of Opera Mozart at The Estates Theatre.
Do not miss the most famous opera of all time, in the excellent performance multiplied by an impressive stage, original costumes and top international cast. Only Prague can offer you this opera of all operas at the authentic theatre where the grat Maestro personaly conducted its world premiere.

THE MAGIC FLUTE

Is The Magic Flute a remarkable fairy-tale opera with comic elements, a folk comedy or a complex work full of free-masonic symbolism? Is it a story of love that overcomes all obstacles or a serious work motivating the viewer to endeavor for perfection? This last dramatic work of Mozart contains all these levels and thus offers an everlasting challenge to all who attempt to bring it to the stage. Director David Radok presents his own conception, full of fantasy and interesting insights. David Radok's staging from 1993 shall be tested for the tour of Japan in a new form. The premiere of the renewed production shall take place in Japan and after the return of our operatic ensemble, audiences in Prague shall also have the opportunity ot admire the new version of The Magic Flute. Opera is sung in Czech.

LE NOZZE DI FIGARO - W.A.Mozart

It is now difficult to decipher in the libretto of the marriage of Figaro the reasons why it was once considered controversial. It lampooned human frailties and failings which even the nobility understandably found irresistible. Today, however, we laugh at its comical, almost slapstick situations, humorous resolutions of plots and gratifying masquerade situations; and we do not have the slightest fear that the shrewd Figaro will not protect his sweet Suzanne from the horrors of the count. The enormous success of the marriage of Figaro on its premiere in Prague in 1786 was the reason why Mozart wrote his largest work, Don Giovanni, directly for Prague.

DER MEERGEUSE - Frantisek Skroup

The Czech triptych is a new dramatic project of the National Theatre opera, which each season brings to the stage three unknown thematically connected operas by Czech composers from various periods, in the form of a concert performance. The implementation of this project requires an unusual amount of editing activity . preparation of manuscript materials and also publicity . the programmes for these operas are also conceived as small monographic studies of their authors. With this project we wish to extend in a wider collection awareness of Czech operatic creation and also in this form of presentation to highlight the dramatic art of foreign opera houses on a range of unknown Czech operas. The first range of the Czech triptych for the season 2002/2003 is dedicated to the pre-Smetana generation of authors. It concerns authors born around 1800.
