La Traviata of Giuseppe Verdi
- the most

The novel Lady with camellias by
Alexander Dumas junior inspired Verdi to write this opera, which belongs
to his most famous today. The story of a girl from the Parisian demimonde,
her emotional awakening and forlorn yearning for true love has been
affecting audiences for a 150 years already. Verdi. s music is just as
impressive, giving priority to lyricism and depth of emotion before
theatrical effect. Perhaps that is why the melodies from La Traviata
address every generation with such success.
The four-one time opera to the libretto written by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, based on the novel by Henri Murger, was premicred Feb. 1st 1896 in Turin. Since then it has become a repertory constant and belongs to the most favourite operas by Puccini thanks to its scenes full of passion, lyricism and drama.
Love, jealousy, hate, death . these are the attributes of many operas and so it is with this, the most famous, opera by Puccini. It is set against the background of political strife in Italy in 1800. Dramatically it is once more an opera, which enthrals by its dramatic suspense and scenes imbued with passionate commotion and despair. Puccini. s music is matched to the drama.
Regardless of his efforts the . king of ragtime. , the American composer Scott Joplin did not see his dream . to establish himself in the field of opera as well . come true. The score of his first opera The Guest of Honour (1902-03) was lost and the same fate met the orchestral score of his second opera Treemonisha (1906-10).
The opera is based on an American writer. s novel, written according to a true event. The composer found everything he needed in the story of Cio-Cio-San. s unhappy love . a sentimental story, sharp plot contrasts, exotic setting, action and tenderness. The spiritual background of the opera is the meeting of two cultures . in the character of Pinkerton (as the cynical representative of the superior white race) and a young Japanese girl. The music of Madam Butterfly shows great mastery in giving a true picture of the atmosphere and poetry of the orient, even though it is borne by Puccini. s own harmonious devices.
Verdi was highly captivated by the possibility of bringing a hunchback on stage, a cripple with derision on his lips, tears in his eyes and anxiety in his soul. A person, who knows well enough his doings are wrong, apprehending all the more the curse fallen on his head. Rigoletto is a tragedy of social injustice and inequality, which is evident both in the title character of the jester as well as in the explicit portrayal of the wanton lifestyle of the nobility. Is the Magic flute a remarkable fairy-tale with comic elements, a folk comedy or an encoded work, full of freemason symbols? Mozart. s last opera, a fairy-tale singspiel from 1791 to the libretto of E. Schikaneder is a true masterpiece. The magical fairy-tale story is a multi-layered play full of fantasy, humour, but also philosophy.
The work was made to order (commissioned by the Egyptian viceroy and opera lover Ismail Pasha) for the ceremonial opening of the Suez Canal (17.11.1869), although Verdi only started writing it after its opening.
Verdi endowed the story of the Ethiopian princess Aida, imprisoned as a slave at the court of Egyptian pharaohs and living out her tragic amorous relationship to an Egyptian chieftain, with fervent music.
The ever vivid and tragically dramatic Carmen has enchanted opera viewers worldwide for over 125 years by its Spanish colour and psychologically true raw story and of course the melodically ingenious music of G. Bizet. Prosper Merimée. s novel about passionate love and great jealousy became famous mainly thanks to this renowned opera. It is the story of the beautiful and carefree Carmen, whose flighty life ends by the hand of a spurned lover. The fascinating character of Carmen and Bizet. s music is always inspiring.
